Dragons Den Lebo Gunguluza joins the Entrepreneur Conference line up!

Lebo_GunguluzaLebo Gunguluza has made and lost fortunes in the past, but is now one of South Africa’s most successful businessmen. Lebo is no stranger to hardships as his father passed away when he was young and his mother who was a nurse raised him. Lebo was always committed to his education and attained his Bachelor of Commerce degree at night whilst working in a clothes retail outlet in the day.

After graduating in 1994, he joined the SABC where he soon rose to Marketing Manager of Metro FM from where he was headhunted by ad agency Herdbuoys before striking out on his own. “I had grown up so deprived that I was determined to make a lot of money and never experience poverty again,” says Lebo. “I set three goals: to become a millionaire by age 25, a multimillionaire by 35 and a billionaire by 45.”

His first bushiness was Gunguluza Entertainment; an event based company, which organized club nights and launch parties for corporate companies. From there he branched out into talent management. Corporate Fusion was soon to follow, a business, which operated in publishing, media, communications and events and he soon grew that business to an annual turnover of R14 million per year.

A failed event for a big financial client resulted in Corporate Fusion losing clients worth a total of R7 million in three weeks. The end result was Gunguluza finding himself R4 million in debt. His newly formed Gunguluza Enterprises and Media Group (GEM Group) closed down. He picked up the pieces and acquired a Primi Piatti franchise in Rosebank, which he successfully promoted and it became a huge success and he started rebuilding the GEM Group.

He left the Primi Piatti franchise to his ex-wife after having paid off his debts over three years. All this time, the reformed GEM Group was showing consistent growth. By restructuring and refocusing the company after he identified media, hospitality, technology and property as the sectors he wanted to play in. Through hard work, dedication and wise investment, Lebo rebuilt his company GEM Group to be a multi-million Rand business with more than twelve print publications, stakes in numerous hotels and he has diversified into architectural design and construction. He is also involved in executive travel and transportation, events, manufacturing as well as mobile technologies.
